SHAKER CLUB

It would have to be generally accepted that the main ingredients for any successful

bar

are atmosphere, entertainment and personnel. The Shaker Club in Cleveland's famed Shaker Square has those qualities in abundance and an added bonus in a touch of class.

Newly decorated throughout, the Shaker Club has retained those unique features that have made it one of Northeast Ohio's most well-known gay bars. The imposing mahagony bar on the upper level and the striking niched glass-stained window still dominate the view upon entering the bar. But now the upper level boasts a new game room and an intimate lounge in the rear for quiet relaxing. In addition to the mellower atmosphere and new lounge furniture, new pin-ball machines, table-top TV tennis/hockey and tables for backgammon await the patron's pleasure.

The lower level has also been redecorated, with more improvements planned at a later date. The new bright yellows, oranges and reds and accent lighting enhance the newly acquired paintings and add vitality to the disco-bar. The new location for the dance floor doubles the previous dance area and is one of the most creative of the remodeling ideas.

The improved lighting and sound systems give Deejay Eric Boroush the best possible outlet for what the Plain Dealer's Tim Joyce tagged Cleveland's only true disco. The sound is rich

and mellow with full, resonant

tones that are never glaring or ear shattering. Eric's selection of music, including occasional slow number, has the strong approval of the bar's patrons, as the always packed dance floor testifies.

The platform in the center of the huge bar on the lower level has become a stage for what promises to be series of outstanding professional entertainments, which began with Le Femme Jesters the week of December 8. According to Dick Deutch, Shaker Club owner, more live singing performances and other entertainments are planned. The popularity of bar shows in the Cleveland area should issue in a new era for the Shaker Club. And also a first: no special admission for shows! Adding to the newness of the

A TOUCH OF CLASS

Shaker Club is the food service on the lower level. Hot deep-pan pizza is the first major menu item. The recipe for this Shaker Club specialty is an original Chicago creation, according to Deutch. A giant slice of this delicious pizza is only fifty cents. Additions to the menu will depend on the needs and wishes of the customers.

In the long run though, it's the personnel at a bar that makes its reputation. And in John, Sue, Jay, Allan, Larry Frank and Cheryl the Shaker Club has a congenial combination of personalities. And for those who think it's the clientele rather than the personnel that make a bar, a frequent visitor from Pennsylvania put it nicely: "The Shaker Club is a great place -friendly and cruisy!"
